So I got $500 for my birthday from my family. There's so many things I want right now: an iPod Nano, a treadmill, a ring from Tiffany's, and new clothing. But, I decided to resist the urge to blow my money and I took advantage of this killer CD offer at my credit union (SECU). It's a CD at an APR of 5.05%. Sure, at the end of the 13-month term, I may not have that much more than the initial deposit, but I feel that financial responsibility and stability is a quality that a 25-year-old must possess. So, there you have it... I guess I'm starting to act my age.
So, it's not necessarily the most exciting thing in the world, but I am ecstatic that on Wednesday I will be paying off my car (which is four months early). I remember when I bought the car I was thinking about being 25, which is the age that I would have been at the time of payoff if I hadn't made extra payments. It seemed so distant and 25 seemed so old. Well, 25 still seems old, but at least I'll have the car paid off while I'm still 24. I take that back... at least I'll car the car paid off. Period. That makes me so happy :)
I have a wrinkle. I have less energy. I think I might have found a single grey hair. My vision gets worse every year. And I got my Social Security Statement. I am getting old.
Today I got the Social Security Administration's Social Security Statement. For those of you who are younger than me, it's a written record of earnings since one's first job... in my case, my 1996 earnings from Arby's. Before today, 40 quarters was a term that I only used at work. Now, it's a milestone. It's a right. It's something that I flipped potato cakes to be part of. The statement gives a breakdown of what my retirement benefit would be (under different conditions, such as age), my disability benefit, and my spouse/child's benefit if I should become disabled. Let's back up for a second... if I should be married/become a parent and I should become disabled.
I find it so crazy that I have been in the work force for ten years now. I miss the days when my money went to rap CDs, St. Ides, and fast food. I miss the days when I could justify wearing a different shirt to school every day. I miss the days when I didn't even have an ATM card to access my money.
I can only hope that when I become old enough to access my full SS benefit, my life will come full circle: unabashedly spending my hard-earned money on rap CDs, St. Ides, and fast food ;)
